Last year was one of extremes ...
Down in the South Island, Nelson's summer festival speeds up with the anual Trolley
race right down the side of our very own Grampian
villa.
2004 Honda Goldwing GL1800 Motor Trike.
"When we were asked by a guest from the US whether we had any trikes in
our tour fleet (we didn't) that he could tour on with his wife and
children it started us thinking.. "Hmmmm". We genuinely get a buzz out
of finding an innovative solution to even the curliest enquiry, so this
request really stimulated our creative juices flowing.
After a lot of umm-ing and aah-ing, we thought "The hell with it, let's
buy one and find out if it will work"... so we've gone ahead and
purchased on and it's on it's way from the US now, ready for this
upcoming season.

British journalist Bob Clarke joined us for a Best of the Best guided
tour of the South Island with us in Feb 04, and has written up the tale
of his tour over 16 pages and 4 issues of the British custom biker
publication 'Back Street Heroes' . He has that typical Brit dry style
of humor - it's an interesting read. We'll add the pages to the website
as they come available.
Part One is available in jpeg format here:

We've noticed our guests can be split into two basic groups when it
comes to their bike preference when on a motorcycle vacation - those
that want to tour on the bike they ride every day back home, and those
that want make their motorcycle vacation a combined vacation and long
term evaluation of a model they're perhaps considering buying.
For this upcoming season we've added a couple of new models for you to
consider if you're a member of the second group - Triumph's 2300cc three
cylinder behemoth cruiser, the Rocket 3, and BMW's R1200GS. Both mark major milestones for the manufacturers.
Below is our take on the merits of the two models:
2005 Triumph Rocket III - 2300cc Luxury class Cruiser.
This 2300cc monster has not just reset the benchmarks for the cruiser
class, it's annahilated them. Breathtaking, mind boggling, but
non-threatening grunt, great handling and stunning brakes. And it goes
round corners too! Riding a Rocket is just an excercise in hilarity -
you'll find yourself grinning maniacally, and muttering startled oaths
under your breath as you twist the throttle and the world goes into
reverse. And it's dead easy to ride, even for short-asses like me. In
fact, I'm confident my 5' 5" wife Jo could ride it with ease, with out
fearing a tipover when turning or at low speed - it's a prodigiously
heavy beast, but the weight, like the seat height, is very low.
Take a tip from us: If you even have a passing attraction for laid back
cruisers, you HAVE to ride this bike.
If you were considering touring on a Road King or the Rocket's smaller
brother, the 900cc Speedmaster, give the Rocket another look..
P.S. In case you're worried, we've added a windshield to improve rider
protection, and an upgraded seat for increased passenger comfort - the
stock one is for bachelors... :-)
Make no mistake, the Rocket III is not just another motorcycle;
it's the ride of a lifetime. There isn't a benchmark it hasn't
obliterated, a limit it hasn't disregarded. It is, simply, the biggest
and most impressive production motorcycle the world has ever seen. Added
to the breathtaking riding experience are truly original looks that
ensure it will never be mistaken for any other machine.

2005 BMW R1200GS - Deluxe Class Adventure bike:
With the 1200GS, BMW have addressed many of the criticisms we've had
about the 1150GS, most notably of all, the gearbox - now it has a REAL
gearbox. While the 1100 and 1150GS gearboxes made us grind our teeth at
every gearchange, the 1200GS offers slicker shifting and a much nicer
spacing of ratios, particularly with respect the gap between 5th and
6th. Other improvements include significantly increased power, a
reduction in overall weight, improved power-assisted ABS braking , less
vibration (courtesy of the new balancer shaft) and reduced width across
the seat. It's still a bike best suited to taller riders of 5'10" or
more though.
If you're an 1150GS owner or perhaps a Triumph Tiger owner, consider
touring on this vastly improved offering from BMW.

In response to requests from short-legged and female riders wanting a
low seat height middleweight road motorcycle that is NOT a feet-forward
cruiser, we've added a number of BMW's fun and funky F650CS Scarver
models to the fleet. With a seat height of only 29 inches/ 780mm, and
narrow across the frame, the BMW F650CS Scarver will meet the needs of the
shortest riders.
